This play, a paean to democracy is about the saga of a German immigrant to America, Martin Gunther, who welcomes his wife in 1896. By his honesty and skill he attains peace and happiness in their family group. He loses a son in the First World War, lives through the depression of 1933 when he sacrifices all for his benefactor.
